Women's rights activist and Supreme Court lawyer Kirti Singh says there is a marked difference between how many parents treat their daughters and their sons. She says girls aren't given the same kind of food, they're not educated in the same manner, and they're only raised to become someone's wife. "From the time they are born -- or not born -- and continuing till late in life when they become wives or mothers, it's a vicious cycle . of discrimination, and violence keeps on continuing."
Sumanjeet says she sees it all the time. "They send boys to good schools, they give them good food, nice clothes to wear. They treat them well. They say, 'Oh, it's my son.' To the daughter they say, 'Get the cow dung, sweep the floors. What will you do with an education?'"" (CNN, 12 januari 2013)

Als je op wikipedia 'rape in India' ingeeft, krijg je tragisch genoeg zelfs een zoekresultaat. 

Iemand een zakske chips?

Iemand die wekelijks enkele zakken chips verzet, kunt ge gerust 'ne kenner' noemen. Maar als ge maar kunt kiezen uit Lays zout, masala (niet te eten), Spanish tomato tango of American style cream and onion,  hebt g'er na 3,5 jaar chips eten ook ni echt veel zin meer in. Nog PS: Ik wist vroeger helemaal niet dat Lays zijn smaken volledig aanpast aan het land! Nu dus wel. Lays Bicky is hier dus niet te verkrijgen... of wat had ge gedacht...

Smog - NIET VOOR GEVOELIGE KIJKERS

Zo ziet de lucht er regelmatig uit hier in Delhi tijdens de winter. Smog, heet het goedje dat er in normale klimatologische omstandigheden niet zou hangen. Helaas dus.

De eerste keer, zo'n 3,5 jaar geleden, toen we er hier in Delhi mee geconfronteerd werden, had ik het gevoel mezelf te vergassen door het smerige goedje in te ademen. Maar aangezien 'niet ademen' ook geen optie was...

In elk geval zorgt het bij mij voor vermoeidheid (gebrek aan zuurstof in de lucht) en ontstoken sinussen.  In België gaan ontstoken sinussen bij mij samen met snotterigheid en verkoudheden. Hier dus met het vieze goedje dat de naam smog draagt.

Daarom maak ik m'n neus tegenwoordig dagelijks yoga-gewijs schoon. Met een soort theekannetje waar je zout water in doet. Dit moet je dan van in je ene neusgat naar je andere laten lopen. Zo'n 500ml. Man man man, wie had ooit gedacht dat ik dat in mijn leven nog zou moeten doen!

Kerstkalkoen

Voor de verandering kon je bij de kippen-slachter op INA-market nu ook kerstkalkoenen kopen. Verser kan niet!

Water

New Delhi. Meer nog: Chanakyapuri. Meer nog: de Amerikaanse ambassade. Naast de compound van de Amerikaanse ambassade ligt een sloppenwijk. Het contrast is uiteraard immens. Je vraagt je af hoe dit mogelijk is. Maar honderden mensen leven er zonder deftige voorzieningen. Voor water is het wachten op de watertanker die af en toe passeert. En dan... kan je je maar best haasten, want anders heb je niets. Schrijnend...
