Festive launch of four Flemish picture books in India

The FLF is proud that the first translations of Flemish picture books in India have been launched successfully!

Four books were translated into Hindi: ‘Rikki' by Guido Van Genechten, ‘Slaap lekker, Rosalie' (Sweet dreams, Rosalie) by Brigitte Minne and An Candaele, ‘Vogeltjelief' (Sweet birdie) by Kristien Aertssen and ‘Willy' by Geert De Kockere and Carll Cneut.
The books are published in the series ‘Saat Samunder Paar Se' (meaning From Across the Seven Seas) by A&A Book Trust. The series introduces the children in India to stories from all over the world. A&A Book Trust believes in the power of books to make a difference, and has children at the nucleus of its activities. Its activities are principally set up to bring books and children in rural India together.

The set of four Flemish books said hello to India and her children, at the National Bal Bhavan in New Delhi on 20 February 2010. The colourful event was attended by nearly 200 children, teachers, authors and illustrators.

After a lively welcome song sung together by all, the books were launched by the Belgian Ambassador H. E. Jean M. Deboutte, who warmly introduced the books commenting upon the creative excellence of each and who expressed the hope that children will have lots of fun with them. Expressing his appreciation for the quality of production, he called this pioneering effort between the two countries a noteworthy success. Four children were invited to briefly speak on a book each, as spontaneous reviewers. ‘Slaap lekker Rosalie' by Brigitte Minne and An Candaele emerged as the top favourite. Sofie Wuyts, co-translator of 3 books was very happy to be associated in the effort and tried to strike lively conversation with the children. A&A Book Trust had special thanks for the FLF for their generosity helping turn this dream into a reality.

Every child in the audience got a book from this set, to take home with them. The celebration concluded with a cheerful tea party in the Bal Bhavan lounge.

March is a month of school examinations in India. The book promotion activities will hence unleash in the next month and go on till the summer vacation time.
